The Suna - İnan Kıraç Research Institute on Mediterranean Civilizations (AKMED), was founded at Antalya in 1996 as an institution of the Vehbi Koç Foundation for the purpose of supporting academic studies targeting the history, archaeology and other cultural assets of the Mediterranean areas of Anatolia in the unveiling, documentation, conservation, interpretation and publishing.

The Institute has regularly supported archaeological excavations, repair and survey projects in the region, whereas it serves the scholars with its rich library and information-document-visual archives; in addition to organising nationwide and international conferences the Institute also publishes and contributes to young scholars through graduate projects.
